Privacy Policy
Thank you for choosing our mobile application ("Diary Up"). We are committed to protecting your privacy and providing you with a safe and enjoyable user experience. This Privacy Policy applies to the iOS version of the Diary Up app.
Introduction
This Privacy Policy ("Privacy Policy") describes the privacy practices that we, Diary Up ("Diary", "We", "Our"), employ with regard to collecting, using and disclosing information, both personal and non-personal information, which we receive when you use our Services. By using the Services you consent to the practices described in this Privacy Policy. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THE PRACTICES EXPLAINED IN THIS PRIVACY POLICY, DO NOT ACCESS, BROWSE OR USE THE DIARY SERVICES.
We are committed to safeguarding any information collected through the Services. This Privacy Policy is intended to inform you of our policies and procedures regarding the collection, use and disclosure of information on our Services. We also want to inform you about your choices regarding information you share with us. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know (see "Contact Us" section below).
As used in this Privacy Policy, the terms "using" and "processing" information include storing information locally on your device, subjecting the information to statistical or other analysis and using or handling information in any way, including, but not limited to collecting, storing, evaluating, modifying, deleting, using, combining, disclosing and transferring information within our organization or among our affiliates within the United States or internationally.
Information We Collect
Diary Up is designed as a private, offline-first diary. You are not required to create an account, and we do not operate servers that store your diary content. The App may collect or process the following information:
- Content you create: Diary entries, photos, videos, voice recordings, attachments, tags and other content you create in the App. This content is stored locally on your device and is not transmitted to us. It is never shared with advertisers or ad networks. If you choose to use iCloud backup, this content is stored in your personal iCloud Drive (see "iCloud Backup" below).
- Crash reports: If the App crashes, anonymous crash data (such as device model, iOS version, and the crash stack) may be collected by our crash reporting provider (Firebase Crashlytics) to help us diagnose and fix issues.
- Usage statistics: We may use Firebase Analytics to collect anonymous, aggregate statistics about how the App is used (for example, which features are used and how often). This data does not identify you and is used only to improve the App. Analytics collection can be disabled by us at any time and does not include the content of your diary.
- Advertising data: The App displays ads supplied by Google AdMob (see "Advertising and Your Choices" and "Third-Party Services" below). When an ad is requested, Google may collect your device's advertising identifier, your IP address (from which a coarse, city-level location is derived), and information about which ads were shown or tapped. This data is separate from, and never combined with, the content of your diary.
- Purchase status: Whether an active purchase that removes advertising exists for your Apple ID. This is a yes/no answer read from Apple's StoreKit (see "In-App Purchases" below). We do not receive your payment details, your name, or any other information about the transaction.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Improve the App and our services;
- Respond to your feedback and support requests;
- Analyze App usage and performance;
- Display and measure advertising that keeps the App free;
- Determine whether you have removed advertising, based on your App Store purchase; and
- Comply with legal and regulatory requirements.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share your diary content with any third party — including advertisers or ad networks. Diary Up is supported by advertising supplied by Google AdMob, and uses advertising identifiers for advertising purposes as described in "Advertising and Your Choices" below.
Advertising and Your Choices
Diary Up shows advertising supplied by Google AdMob. Ads appear when you return to the App after it has been in the background for a while, after you save a diary entry, and as a banner at the bottom of the diary detail screen. To provide and measure these ads, the Google Mobile Ads SDK may collect and process your device's advertising identifier (IDFA), your IP address and coarse location derived from it, and information about ad impressions and interactions. This information is handled by Google as our advertising partner; it is never linked to the content of your diary.
You are in control of advertising personalization:
- App Tracking Transparency (iOS): When you first open the App, iOS asks whether the App may track you across other companies' apps and websites. If you decline, the App will still show ads, but they will not be personalized using your advertising identifier. You can change this choice at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
- Consent for personalized ads: Where required by law (for example in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland), we ask for your consent through Google's certified consent management platform before any personalized advertising data is processed. You can review or change that choice at any time from More → Ads → Ad privacy settings inside the App.
- Advertising identifier: You can reset your advertising identifier from your iOS privacy settings. When tracking is not permitted, neither the App nor its advertising partner may use that identifier to track you across other companies' apps and websites.
- Google ad settings: You can opt out of personalized advertising from Google at https://adssettings.google.com.
- Remove ads: The App offers an optional purchase that removes all advertising. It is not required in order to use the App, and not buying it does not restrict any diary feature. See "In-App Purchases" below.
In-App Purchases
Diary Up offers optional in-app purchases whose only effect is to remove all advertising. They are the only paid items in the App, every diary feature is free without them, and no purchase changes what happens to your diary content — your entries are never sent to us or to anyone else as part of a purchase.
- What is offered: a monthly auto-renewable subscription, a yearly auto-renewable subscription, and a one-time (non-consumable) lifetime purchase.
- Payment: All purchases are processed by Apple through your App Store account. We never receive or store your name, your payment card details, or any other payment information, and we cannot charge or refund you directly.
- What the App reads: To decide whether to show advertising, the App asks Apple's StoreKit whether an active purchase exists for this Apple ID. We receive only that yes/no answer and the product identifier; it contains no personal information, is not linked to your diary content, and is stored locally on your device.
- Auto-renewal and cancellation: Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can manage or cancel a subscription, and see when it renews, at any time in your Apple ID subscription settings (Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions). Deleting the App does not cancel a subscription.
- Restoring a purchase: If you reinstall the App, or use another device signed in with the same Apple ID, you can restore your purchase with the "Restore Purchases" button on the purchase screen.
- Apple's terms: Purchases are also governed by Apple's Media Services Terms and Conditions and by Apple's Privacy Policy at https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/.
Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services:
- Firebase: We use Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics to capture usage statistics data and automatic crash reports. Data collected by Firebase is anonymous and purely statistical and does not include the content of your diary. For more information, please see Firebase's Privacy Policy at https://firebase.google.com/support/privacy. Data processed by Firebase is handled by Google, which may process data in the United States and other countries.
- Google AdMob (Google Mobile Ads SDK): We use AdMob to display advertising and to measure its performance. AdMob may collect your device's advertising identifier, device and app information, your IP address and coarse location derived from it, and ad interaction data, for advertising, measurement and analytics purposes, and may combine this data with information from other apps and websites (cross-app tracking) when you have granted tracking permission. Data processed by AdMob is handled by Google, which may process data outside your country. For more information, please see Google's Privacy Policy at https://policies.google.com/privacy and "How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services" at https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
- Google User Messaging Platform (UMP): We use Google's consent SDK to collect and store your advertising consent choices where required by law, and to provide the "Ad privacy settings" screen.
iCloud Backup
If you choose to use the backup feature, the App creates a backup of your diary (including text, photos, videos, voice recordings and attachments) and stores it in a private container in your personal iCloud Drive, which is synchronized to your other devices by Apple. The backup container is private and hidden from the Files app. We do not have access to the data stored in your iCloud account, and we cannot read or retrieve it. You can manage or delete these backups at any time from the backup screen inside the App, from your device's iCloud settings, or by deleting the App. iCloud is provided by Apple Inc., and its use is subject to Apple's privacy policy at https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/.
Device Permissions
Diary Up may ask for your permission to access the following features of your device. Each permission is requested only when you use the related feature, and you can change your choices at any time in your device settings:
- Photo Library: To add photos and videos to your diary, and to save photos and videos from the App to your photo library.
- Camera: To take photos to add to your diary.
- Microphone: To record voice diaries and voice notes.
- Location: To optionally add your location to a diary entry. Location data is used only for the entry you attach it to and is stored locally on your device. (This is separate from the coarse location that ad networks derive from your IP address.)
- Face ID / Touch ID: To unlock the App with your device's biometric authentication. Biometric data never leaves your device and is handled entirely by iOS's Secure Enclave. We do not collect or store your biometric information.
- Notifications: To send you optional daily reminders to write your diary. Reminders are generated and delivered locally on your device.
- Tracking (App Tracking Transparency): To ask whether the App may use your device's advertising identifier to measure and personalize advertising. If you decline, the App continues to work normally and still shows ads, but they are not personalized using that identifier.
Local Data and Your Control
Your diary content is stored locally on your device. You control your data at all times:
- No account: Using the App does not require an account, and we do not hold any copy of your diary on our servers.
- Export: You can export your diary content at any time (for example, as a text file or a backup file) to keep or transfer your data.
- Delete: You can delete individual diary entries permanently, or delete all App data by removing the App from your device. iCloud backups can be removed from the backup screen or from your iCloud settings.
Data Retention and Deletion
Diary content remains on your device until you delete it or remove the App. Backups you create remain in your iCloud Drive until you delete them, in accordance with Apple's iCloud retention practices. Crash and usage statistics are retained by Firebase, and advertising data is retained by Google, in accordance with their respective data retention policies; none of these contain your diary content. Advertising consent choices, and the yes/no record of whether you have removed advertising, are stored on your device and are deleted when you delete the App; the purchase itself remains on record with Apple and can be restored at any time. Advertising consent choices can be changed at any time from the "Ad privacy settings" screen inside the App.
International Data Transfers
Our service providers (Google, for Firebase and AdMob, and Apple, for iCloud) may process data in countries outside your own, including the United States. Where required, these transfers rely on the providers' contractual safeguards, such as Standard Contractual Clauses. Your diary content itself stays on your device (and in your private iCloud container) and is not transferred to us.
Data Security
We take appropriate measures to protect your information from unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. Diary content is stored locally on your device and, if you enable it, can be protected by a PIN or by Face ID / Touch ID. However, no data transmission over the internet or mobile network can be guaranteed to be completely secure. Therefore, we cannot ensure or warrant the security of any information you transmit to us.
Children's Privacy
Our App is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected personal information of a child under 13, we will take steps to delete such information as soon as possible.
Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update or modify this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the App or by updating the "last updated" date below. We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically to stay informed about our information practices.
This version adds an "In-App Purchases" section describing the optional purchases that remove advertising (two auto-renewable subscriptions and a one-time lifetime purchase), clarifies where ads appear and how a purchase is restored, and updates the advertising-identifier wording for current versions of iOS.
